On Valentines Day, February 14, 2024, Pat went home to be with her greatest love and closest friend, Jesus, and to also see her second greatest love, her husband for 64 years, Jacques O’Hara. Anyone who knew Pat would have thought that she purposely planned for her heavenly home coming to occur on this day.
Born in Dayton, Ohio on December 11, 1932, she was the only daughter, and youngest child of Job Ernest Shafer and Thelma (Beam) Shafer. Her four older brothers (Ivan, Paul, Harry, and Alan) made sure their little sister was a tough, emotionally strong, but loving individual who accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal savior as a young girl. Pat was a 1951 graduate of Fairview High School and a 1955 graduate of the University of Cincinnati with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. While a patient in UC hospital, Pat met the love of her life, Jacques (Jack) O’Hara, a medical student at UC. They were married in November 1955 and began a 64-year-old love affair that was temporarily paused when Jack went home to heaven in 2019.
Always the caregiver at heart, Pat spent her life serving her Lord through nursing, leading a child evangelism fellowship club in her home, providing leadership in the Dayton Medical Auxiliary, coordinating activities for Woman’s Christian Fellowship, and providing care in the City Mission Clinic with Jack. After her children were in high school, Pat returned to nursing, ministering to the patients and families on the oncology floor at Miami Valley Hospital.
When Jack and Pat retired to Adams County in 1993, Pat worked with the startup efforts of the Adams County Pregnancy Resource Center. She found her passion when volunteering her time to Hospice of Hope-ACRMC in-patient wing, comforting those in their final moments and their families.
Pat is survived by her children, Peggy (James) Chalker, Mark (Jodi) O’Hara, Kent (Susan) O’Hara, grandchildren; Stephanie, and Austin (Kelsey) O’Hara, Carrie (Austin) Featherstone, Jack Chalker, and Kate O’Hara, and great grandchildren Maelyn, Leah, and Autumn O’Hara.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, February 19, 2024, at 11:00am at Grace Fellowship in Peebles, Ohio, where Pat was a faithful member. Viewing will be from 10 a.m. before the service, The burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery, Versailles, Ohio. Services are entrusted to the Thompson-Meeker Funeral Home in West Union.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace Fellowship of Peebles or Hospice of Hope-Ohio (In-Patient wing).
